Here are some practical things we recommend knowing before your Tanzania adventure.
Passport & Visa
Before booking your trip, make sure your passport is valid for at least six months from your intended arrival date and has an unused page for immigration purposes. Tanzania's immigration authorities may also ask for evidence of your return or onward travel.
Visa requirements depend on your nationality. Many travelers can apply for a Tanzania visa online, and some nationalities may be eligible for visa-free entry or other arrangements.
If you need a visa, we recommend checking the requirements for your specific nationality before travelling. Tanzania Immigration advises travelers to use the official visa application system when applying online.
Tip: Don't leave your visa application until the last minute, particularly if your nationality falls under special or referral visa requirements.
Tanzania Currency
The official currency is the Tanzanian Shilling (TZS).
However, US dollars are also commonly used within the tourism industry, especially for safari services, lodges, tips, and some tourist activities.
You don't need to carry large amounts of cash with you. ATMs are available in major towns and cities, but they become less common once you travel into remote safari areas.
We recommend travelling with:
- A bank card for larger payments
- Some Tanzanian Shillings for everyday purchases
- Some US dollars where appropriate
- A backup payment method
It's always better to have some cash with you before heading into a remote safari area.
Language in Tanzania
Swahili (Kiswahili) is the main national language of Tanzania, while English is widely used in tourism, hotels, safari companies, and other services.
You can comfortably travel around Tanzania without speaking Swahili, especially when travelling with a professional safari company.
However, learning a few Swahili words can make your interactions more enjoyable.

You will quickly hear these words during your time in Tanzania.
Travel Insurance
Travel insurance is something we strongly recommend rather than something to think about after you arrive.
A good policy should ideally cover medical treatment, trip cancellation or interruption, lost baggage, and emergency assistance.
If you're going on safari, consider a policy that also provides emergency evacuation, particularly if your itinerary takes you into remote areas.
If you are climbing Mount Kilimanjaro, check carefully that your insurance covers trekking at the altitude of your chosen route.
And if Zanzibar is part of your trip, check the current entry requirements and insurance arrangements specifically applicable to Zanzibar before travelling.
Health Before Your Trip
You don't need to worry unnecessarily about travelling to Tanzania, but it's sensible to prepare before you leave.
Speak with a qualified travel-health professional before your trip about vaccinations, malaria prevention, medication, and any health precautions relevant to your itinerary.
What you need can depend on where you are travelling from and which parts of Tanzania you plan to visit, so personal medical advice is better than following a general checklist.
It's also a good idea to bring enough of your regular medication for the entire trip, together with a little extra in case of delays.
What Should You Pack?
You don't need to bring your entire wardrobe to Tanzania.
For a safari, practical and comfortable clothing is usually best. Lightweight clothes work well during the day, while a warm layer is useful for early morning and evening game drives.
We recommend packing:

- A warm jacket or fleece
- Comfortable walking shoes
- Sun hat and sunglasses
- Sunscreen
- Insect repellent
- Light rain jacket
- Personal medication
- Camera and extra batteries

- Reusable water bottle
If you're combining your safari with Zanzibar, add swimwear and beach clothing.
If you're climbing Kilimanjaro, your packing list will be much more extensive because temperatures can become extremely cold at higher elevations.
Weather Can Change During Your Trip
Tanzania is a large country, so don't expect the same weather everywhere.
You may experience cool mornings in the highlands, warm days on safari, and hot, humid weather on the coast.
Even during the dry season, mornings can be surprisingly cold in areas such as Ngorongoro and around Mount Kilimanjaro.
That's why we recommend bringing layers rather than packing only for the warmest temperatures.
Internet & Mobile Network
You can normally find mobile connectivity and Wi-Fi in cities, towns, hotels, and many lodges.
However, don't expect a strong internet connection everywhere on safari.
Some remote areas have limited or no network coverage, and lodge Wi-Fi can vary in speed.
Our advice is simple: download important documents, maps, booking information, and entertainment before leaving for remote areas.
And don't worry too much about being offline. A few hours without your phone can actually make your safari even more enjoyable.
Electricity & Charging
Tanzania generally uses 230V electricity and Type G plugs.
A universal travel adapter is useful if your devices use a different plug.
Bring a power bank, especially if photography is important to you. On safari, you may spend many hours away from your accommodation, and you don't want to discover that your camera or phone has run out of power just when something exciting appears.
Some remote camps may have limited electricity or charging hours, so it's worth charging your devices whenever you have the opportunity.
Tipping in Tanzania
Tipping is common in Tanzania's tourism industry and is generally seen as a way of showing appreciation for good service.
You may choose to tip your:
- Safari guide
- Safari cook
- Hotel or lodge staff
- Kilimanjaro mountain crew
- Other people who provide exceptional service
There is no need to feel pressured to give an amount that is uncomfortable for you. A tip should reflect the service you received and what you feel is appropriate.

Getting Around Tanzania
Tanzania is a large country, and distances between destinations can be greater than many first-time visitors expect.
Safari travel is normally done in a 4x4 safari vehicle, allowing you to reach national parks and explore areas away from the main roads.
Depending on your itinerary, domestic flights can also save considerable travel time.
For example, you might travel by road between several northern safari parks and then take a flight to Zanzibar instead of returning overland.
When planning your itinerary, we recommend considering travel time as part of the experience. A slightly slower itinerary can often be much more enjoyable than trying to fit too many destinations into a short holiday.
Safari Roads Are Part of the Adventure
Not every road in a national park is smooth.
You may experience rough or dusty roads, especially when travelling into remote areas. During rainy periods, some roads can become more challenging.
This is normal for an African safari.
The reward is being able to reach wildlife areas that simply cannot be accessed by ordinary city vehicles.
So bring your camera, sit back, and enjoy the journey—even when the road gets a little bumpy.
Respect Wildlife
One of the most important things to remember on safari is that you are entering the animals' environment.
Always listen to your safari guide and follow park regulations.
Don't try to get out of the vehicle without your guide's permission, don't call animals toward the vehicle, and never attempt to feed wildlife.
Sometimes the best wildlife encounters happen when everyone simply stays quiet and lets the animals behave naturally.
Respect Local Culture
Tanzania is home to many different communities, traditions, and cultures.
When visiting villages or meeting local people, be respectful and open-minded. Ask before taking photographs, dress appropriately when visiting cultural or religious places, and listen to your guide's advice.
You don't have to know everything about Tanzanian culture before you arrive. Curiosity and respect go a long way.
Photography
You will probably take more photographs in Tanzania than you expect!
A camera with a good zoom is useful for wildlife, while binoculars can make distant animals much easier to see.
Remember that some wildlife encounters may happen suddenly. Keep your camera ready, but don't spend the entire safari looking through a screen.
Sometimes the best photograph is the one you simply keep in your memory.
Food & Drinking Water
Tanzania offers a wide variety of food, from local Tanzanian dishes to international cuisine in tourist hotels and lodges.
If you have dietary requirements—such as vegetarian, vegan, halal, allergies, or specific food preferences—tell us before your trip so we can communicate your requirements to your accommodation and safari team.
For drinking water, use bottled or properly treated water unless your accommodation confirms that its tap or refill water is safe to drink.
A reusable bottle is a good idea and can help reduce unnecessary plastic waste.
How Much Cash Should You Carry?
You don't need to carry all your holiday money in cash.
A combination of cards, Tanzanian Shillings, and some US dollars is generally more practical.
Keep your cash and important documents secure, particularly when travelling between destinations.
For safari trips, most major expenses are normally arranged as part of your package, so your personal spending may mainly be for tips, drinks, souvenirs, optional activities, and other personal purchases.
Is Tanzania Safe for Tourists?
Millions of travelers visit Tanzania for safaris, Kilimanjaro climbs, Zanzibar holidays, and cultural experiences.
As with travelling anywhere, use common sense and take care of your belongings.
During a safari, the most important safety rule is to follow your guide's instructions around wildlife.
In towns and cities, keep valuable items secure, avoid displaying large amounts of cash, and use reputable transportation.

What About Photography and Local People?
Tanzanians are generally friendly and welcoming, but it's important to remember that people are not tourist attractions.
If you want to photograph someone, ask permission first.

A simple smile and “Naweza kupiga picha?”—May I take a photo?—can be a great way to start.

Many first-time visitors worry about things that turn out to be much easier than expected.
You don't need to speak Swahili.
You don't need to know how to navigate the national parks.
You don't need to plan every minute of your safari.
And you don't need to understand everything about Tanzanian wildlife before you arrive.
