Day 1 :
Departure: 7:00 AM from your hotel or the airport
The drive from Dar es Salaam to Mikumi follows the A7 highway through Morogoro. It is a tarmac road the whole way, and the scenery shifts from the coastal plain to the foothills of the Uluguru Mountains. You will stop once for fuel and once for lunch, arriving at the park's main gate in the early afternoon.
Arrival and check-in: 1:00 to 2:00 PM
Your guide handles the park formalities at the gate. If you are staying inside the park, you continue straight to camp. If you are staying outside, you check in first and enter for the afternoon drive.
Afternoon game drive: 3:30 to 6:30 PM
This is your first proper game drive, and it focuses on the Mkata floodplain, the park's main wildlife area. Mikumi's plains are an extension of the Selous ecosystem, and they support good numbers of elephants, buffalo, giraffe, zebra, wildebeest, and impala. Lions are present and often seen in the late afternoon, when they begin to move.

Morning game drive: 6:30 to 10:00 AM
Leave before sunrise. Early morning is the best window for predators, and the light on the floodplain is at its best. Your guide will focus on the areas where lions have been sighted recently and on the Hippo Pool on the Ruaha River, where hippos and crocodiles are reliably visible.
Breakfast in the bush: 10:00 to 11:00 AM
A packed breakfast is served at a designated picnic spot. This is standard on full-day drives and saves you the drive back to camp.
Midday rest: 11:30 AM to 3:30 PM
Return to camp for lunch and rest during the hottest part of the day. Wildlife is least active in the early afternoon, and so are most sensible travelers.
Afternoon game drive: 3:30 to 6:30 PM
A second drive to a different sector of the park. If you visited the Hippo Pool in the morning, your guide will take you toward the Chamgwandu Plain or the Mwanambogo area, which offer different habitats and a chance at different species.
