Serengeti National Park is Tanzania's most iconic wildlife destination. It is famous for the Great Wildebeest Migration and for some of the best big cat sightings in Africa. The park stretches across vast savannah in northern Tanzania, and it offers game viewing that few places on earth can match.

The Serengeti is usually the centerpiece of a full Tanzania safari. It covers nearly 15,000 square kilometers, and its open landscape makes wildlife easier to spot than in parks with dense vegetation. Lions, cheetahs, leopards, elephants, giraffes, and buffalo are all present, along with over 500 bird species.

The park's name comes from the Maasai word "Siringet," which means "endless plains." That description holds. Drive for hours, and the horizon does not change.

The Great Migration

The Serengeti is best known for the Great Migration, one of the most remarkable natural events on Earth. Each year, over 2 million wildebeest move across the ecosystem, joined by hundreds of thousands of zebras and gazelles. They follow the rains in search of fresh grazing.

The movement is not a single event. It is a year-long cycle, and where the herds are depends on the month you travel.

Calving Season (January to March)

The herds gather on the short-grass plains of the southern Serengeti. Hundreds of thousands of calves are born within a few weeks. The concentration of vulnerable newborns draws predators, and this is one of the best windows for lion, cheetah, and hyena sightings.

Grumeti River Crossings (May to July)

The herds move north and west, crossing the Grumeti River. Crocodiles wait in the water. The crossings are dramatic, but they are unpredictable and cannot be guaranteed on any given day.

Mara River Crossings (July to September)

This is the most famous phase of the migration. The herds cross the Mara River into Kenya's Masai Mara, and the scenes are intense. This is also the busiest period in the northern Serengeti, with the highest lodge prices and the most vehicles at sightings.

Rich Biodiversity

The Big Cats and Beyond

The Serengeti is one of the best places in Africa to see predators. Lions are present in large prides, particularly around the Seronera Valley and the kopjes. Cheetahs are common on the open plains, where their speed gives them an advantage. Leopards are more elusive, but they are regularly seen resting in trees along the river valleys.

Elephants, buffalo, giraffes, hippos, and crocodiles are all present. Rhino are technically part of the Big Five, but they are extremely rare in the Serengeti. If rhino is a priority, Ngorongoro Crater offers a far better chance.

Birdlife

Over 500 bird species have been recorded in the park. Notable species include the crowned crane, the lilac-breasted roller, and the martial eagle. The varied habitats, from grassland to woodland to riverine forest, support both resident and migratory birds. Birdwatching is strongest during the green season, when migratory species arrive.

Stunning Landscapes

The Endless Plains

The Serengeti's open grasslands are what most people picture when they imagine Africa. They stretch in every direction, broken only by the occasional acacia or rocky outcrop. The light changes constantly, and the plains look different at every hour of the day.

The Kopjes

Scattered across the plains are granite outcrops known as kopjes. These rocky formations provide shelter for wildlife and vantage points for predators. The Maasai kopjes are famous for their resident lion pride. The Simba Kopjes and Seronera Kopjes are also reliable for lion and leopard sightings.

Kopjes are worth stopping at, even without wildlife. They offer shade, a place to stretch, and a different perspective on the plains.

Exciting Activities

Game Drives

Game drives are the main way to explore the Serengeti, and early morning and late afternoon are the most rewarding. Animals are most active in the cooler hours, and the light is at its best. Your guide will know where recent sightings have occurred and will plan the route accordingly.

Hot Air Balloon Safaris

A hot air balloon safari offers a bird's-eye view of the plains at sunrise. You drift silently over the landscape, and you can photograph wildlife from above. Most flights last about an hour and end with a bush breakfast. It is expensive, but it is one of the few experiences that genuinely cannot be replicated from the ground.

Walking Safaris

Walking safaris provide a more intimate way to explore the park. Accompanied by an armed guide, you walk through the wilderness and learn about the park's flora, smaller creatures, and tracks. Much of what you miss from a vehicle becomes visible on foot. Walking safaris are available in selected areas and must be arranged in advance.

Best Time to Visit

Dry Season (June to October)

This is the best window for wildlife viewing. Vegetation thins, animals gather around remaining water sources, and the weather is predictable. Days are warm and nights are cool. This is also peak season, so expect crowds and higher prices, especially in July and August.

Wet Season (November to May)

The wet season brings green landscapes and far fewer visitors. The calving season falls within this period, and the park is full of newborn animals and active predators. Birdwatching is at its best, with migratory species present. The trade-off is rain. Some roads become difficult, and certain camps close during the long rains in April and May.

Practical Information

Getting There

The Serengeti is accessible by road and by air. Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) and Arusha Airport (ARK) are the main gateways.

From Arusha, you can drive to the park in about six hours or fly in 45 minutes. Flying is the better choice if your time is limited, and it turns a travel day into a game drive. Charter flights connect to several airstrips within the park, including Seronera, Kogatende, and Ndutu.

Accommodation

The park offers accommodation across every budget. Tented camps sit inside the park and allow early starts. Lodges near the Seronera Valley offer more facilities. Mobile camps follow the migration and move with the herds, which puts you closer to the action in season.

Park Fees

Park fees for the Serengeti are $82 per person per day for non-residents, plus VAT. These are set by TANAPA and are not negotiable. Concession fees may apply if you stay in a private conservancy area.
