About Nyerere National Park

Nyerere National Park

Nyerere National Park is one of Tanzania's largest national parks—over 30,000 km² in the south of the country, formerly part of the Selous Game Reserve. It's known for its wide floodplains, miombo woodlands, and the Rufiji River, which cuts through the park and shapes much of its wildlife. Visitors come for game drives, boat safaris, and sightings of elephants, lions, giraffes, hippos, crocodiles, and African wild dogs.

Wildlife in Nyerere National Park

Nyerere holds a mix of habitats—open grasslands, woodlands, river channels, and wetlands—which is why its wildlife list is so long.

On game drives, expect elephants, buffalo, giraffes, zebras, lions, leopards, and several antelope species, including impala, waterbuck, and bushbuck. The park is one of the best places in Tanzania for African wild dogs, though sightings are never guaranteed—they roam large territories and follow prey.

The Rufiji River anchors the ecosystem. Hippos and crocodiles live in its waters, while fish eagles, kingfishers, and other birds hunt along the riverbanks. The river also draws elephants and antelope to drink, especially in the dry season.

Game Drives

Game drives are the main way to explore the park. With a guide, you move through different habitats in search of wildlife—from elephants and giraffes to lions and other predators. Morning drives catch animals before the heat; afternoon drives often end with better light for photography.

Boat Safaris on the Rufiji River

A boat safari gives you a different angle on the park. You travel along sections of the Rufiji River, looking for hippos, crocodiles, and birds along the banks. The slower pace gives you time to watch the river scenery and observe wildlife from the water—something most northern parks can't offer.

Walking Safaris

Nyerere is one of the few Tanzanian parks where guided walking safaris are allowed. With an armed ranger, you leave the vehicle and track wildlife on foot—a chance to notice tracks, birdsong, and smaller details that pass by in a 4x4.

Birdwatching and Nature

Nyerere is a strong birdwatching destination, with species spread across the river, wetlands, grasslands, and woodlands. Over 400 species have been recorded. The changing landscapes make it a good choice for travelers who want more than traditional game drives.

Best Time to Visit Nyerere National Park

The dry season (June–October) is the most popular time for a safari. As water becomes scarce across the landscape, animals gather near the Rufiji River and other remaining water sources, making them easier to find. Vegetation thins out, so visibility improves.

Wet season (November–May) brings greener landscapes and strong birdwatching, including migratory species. Rain can affect road conditions and some travel arrangements, so plan for flexibility.

The best time for your visit depends on your preferred activities, accommodation, and flight or road availability—but if wildlife viewing is the priority, aim for June to October.

How to Get to Nyerere National Park

Nyerere sits in southern Tanzania, roughly 200 km southwest of Dar es Salaam. You can reach it by road or domestic flight.

By Air

Flying from Dar es Salaam is the fastest option—around 45 minutes to airstrips inside the park. Scheduled and charter flights serve strips near the main gates, including Mtemere and Siwandu. The right airstrip depends on your accommodation and itinerary, so transfers should be arranged in advance.

By Road

Driving from Dar es Salaam takes 5–7 hours depending on your destination within the park, the gate used, and road conditions. A 4x4 is recommended, especially during the rainy season. Most travelers combine the drive with a stop en route or arrange it as part of a longer southern circuit.

For either option, allow enough time for transfers and confirm the route with your accommodation before departure.

Accommodation in Nyerere National Park

Accommodation ranges from comfortable tented camps to luxury safari lodges. Many properties sit along the Rufiji River—good for boat safaris and river views—while others are set deeper in the park near game drive routes.

Your choice depends on budget, comfort level, location, and the activities you want. Staying near the river makes boat safaris easier; staying inland can put you closer to game drive areas. Availability is limited in peak season (June–October), so book early.
